Discover Simple Ways to Improve Your Looks

When it comes to looking your best, many people obsess over perfection, and achieve nothing. When it comes down to it, looking great isn’t necessarily that difficult. There are plenty of simple ways to vastly improve your looks and style, regardless of your body type, weight, etc. Everyone should do their best to look the best they possibly can. After all, you only get one shot at this life – why not enjoy it?

You can argue that some people are blessed with good looks, and some are not. While this is true to some extent, that doesn’t mean that the less fortunate people are doomed to be ugly for their entire lives! The fact is that you can change your appearance for the better, no matter what you look like.

When you are trying to improve your looks, it is very important to remain realistic. Don’t try to model yourself after celebrities or famous people. Celebrities have personal trainers, personal chefs, personal fashion consultants, etc. that work for them full-time to keep them looking good. Obviously most everyday people can’t afford to do this. Plus, celebrities are often very unhealthy and underweight, so striving to look like them is not a good idea.

The world’s opinion of what beauty is has changed drastically over the past few generations. This is evidenced by old television shows and advertisements. The women in these shows were beautiful, but by today’s standards, they were too fat. The world has become a harsher place in the past 50 years or so, especially to young women. Girls are taught from a young age to try to look like the people they see on TV – a goal that is pretty much unattainable for most people.

This pattern is no good. It teaches young women that they need to be super skinny in order to be beautiful – something that is simply not true. It also teaches women to hate themselves if they DON’T look like their favorite celebrity. As a society, we need to break this cycle before it ruins us. All you can do, as an individual, is ignore the celebrities and their unhealthily perfect-looking bodies, and focus on improving yourself.

Set clear goals, but don’t become obsessed with looking perfect. Perfection is something that, in this author’s opinion, does not exist in this world. If you strive to be perfect, you will live an unpleasant, unhappy life, and you will never achieve your goal. If you strive to look your best, given your circumstances, you can achieve your goal while remaining happy and healthy.

Everyone must find their own way to good looks. Everyone is different, and everyone’s body will respond differently to different treatments, activities, etc. This article will give you the ideas to get you started, and provide many of the tools you will need to meet your goals, but ultimately the bulk of the work is up to you. Also, keep in mind that you will probably need to tailor a plan to your specific needs/goals.

Make a Plan

Whenever you set out to accomplish something, making a plan should be the first step. This is the planning stage, where you lay out all your options, weigh them, and decide on a ambitious, yet realistic plan. Set goals that are attainable, but that will make you work hard. If weight loss is your main goal, set several goals in incremental sections. That way, you can feel good about yourself when you reach each goal, and you can reward yourself after each completed goal.

Put your plan on paper, instead of just keeping it in your head. For many people, it helps to visualize goals and checklists. Plus, if you write it down, you won’t forget anything, and you’ll have the satisfaction of crossing out steps that you have already completed! Make your plan as detailed as you want, and make sure that it is realistic. You want to set ambitious goals, but you want to be able to achieve those goals relatively quickly (within a year or so).

Ask Others

During your planning process, ask others to honestly tell you what they think of your looks, and what they think could be improved upon. Ask friends, coworkers, family – even complete strangers if you’re more comfortable with that. Take everything into consideration, especially if multiple people mention the same thing. Work this advice into your plan.

Join a Gym

A huge part of looking good is getting into good physical shape. Even if you are already in good shape, your looks can still benefit from regular trips to the gym. Gym memberships range in cost from $30-$100+ per month, so keep that in mind. Many gyms offer 24 hour access, so you can work out whenever you have the time.

If you are someone who doesn’t feel comfortable working out in front of other people, you might want to invest in some exercise equipment for your home. A nice set of free weights will benefit you, as will leg weights (the kind you strap onto your legs and walk/jog in). Be sure to get plenty of cardio exercise, such as jogging or running. Cardio is the backbone of good fitness.

Stay Hydrated

Experts estimate that roughly 75% of Americans are dehydrated on a regular basis. With so many tasty, sugary drinks on the market, it’s no wonder that most people don’t drink enough water. Doctors recommend 8-10 glasses (8oz) of water per day for full-grown adults. Unless you take it to an extreme point (200 oz+ of water per day), you can’t really drink too much water, so have at it!

Water plays an important role in your health. First of all, staying hydrated keeps your skin healthy and glowing. It also makes it easier to exercise, and flushes toxins from your system. You will find that if you start drinking water regularly, you will feel much better in general. Better yet, if you can manage to replace sugary drinks such as soda with water, you will feel even better! Soda is filled with empty calories, and it has major effects on your health. It also rots your teeth, which damages your overall appearance!

If you have good tap water in your area (clean looking, doesn’t smell like chlorine) then you can get away with drinking straight from the tap. If your tap water is not so clean, or you are sensitive to impurities, you should invest in a water filter. There are many different types and brands on the market. I recommend the faucet attachments that filter water immediately as it comes out of the tap. These filters allow you to get filtered, fresh, cold water whenever you want it. The alternative is to get a pitcher water filter, which work just as well, but are not quite as easy since you’ll have to manually fill them and keep them in your fridge so that the water stays cold.

Practice Good Hygiene

This should be an easy one, but many adults don’t fully understand the importance of good hygiene. You should be brushing your teeth every day, twice per day. You should also floss 1-2 times per day. Before going to bed, you should shower and make sure to wash your face. Buy cleaning products that complement your skin type and allergenic needs. Shower daily, twice per day if needed, especially if you work a physically straining job.

You should also find a deodorant that works for you. For a variety of reasons, some deodorants just don’t work for certain people. You probably use the deodorant you have always used – if it’s working for you, great! If it’s not, you should find a new one. For more active individuals, stronger deodorants are required. Also, people that “run hot” or warm-blooded people might find that they need stronger, athlete-grade deodorants to stay fresh.

The problem a lot of people face is that they smell bad, but they don’t know it. You get used to what your body smells like, and often you don’t even notice when you smell funky. To combat this, practice good hygiene, invest in a good deodorant, and ask others to tell you, with honesty, if you smell bad. Asking other people is the only way you can really judge if you smell fresh or not. Covering body odor with cologne or perfume does very little. You need to address the root of the smell, and eliminate it.

Get Enough Sleep

Sleep, just like water, is essential to good health. In these hectic times, many people simply don’t get enough sleep. At minimum, you should be getting 6-8 hours of sleep per day. Teenagers, as well as athletes and people with more strenuous jobs, should get 7-9 hours of sleep per day. If you feel that you can’t find time to sleep at least 6 hours per night, every night, then perhaps you need to adjust your social schedule to make room for sleep. Keep in mind that anything over 10 hours of sleep per night will not be beneficial, and may actually cause you to feel more tired throughout the day.

Also, keep in mind that simply sleeping the right number of hours is nowhere near as beneficial as sleeping the right number of hours, WITH a regular sleep schedule. The human body operates on habit, and it will function much better if you follow a regular sleep schedule. It can be hard to come up with a solid sleep schedule, especially for those who work irregular shifts, or have a family to take care of. However, you owe it to yourself to try.

The best thing to do is go to bed at the same time every night, whether it’s a weekday or a weekend. Also do your best to get up at roughly the same time every day. You may be able to treat yourself on the weekends with an extra hour or so of sleep, but anything more than that will upset your sleep schedule. If you follow a regular schedule for a few months, you will find that your body becomes used to sleeping at specific times, and waking up at specific times. It will become much easier to get out of bed in the morning, and much easier to fall asleep at night, as your body’s internal schedule will be in tune with your sleep schedule.

Wash Your Hair Every Other Day

Your hair contains natural vitamins that are beneficial to the health of your hair. Unfortunately, most shampoos destroy or wash away these vitamins. This is why beauty professionals advise that you wash your hair every other day. You can rinse your hair daily, but only use shampoo every other day. This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t shower daily!

Find a Shopping Buddy

When shopping for new clothes, shoes, etc. it helps a lot to have a shopping buddy who is a stylish person. You can try things on, show them, and ask for feedback. It helps to go shopping with a close friend – someone who’s opinion you value, and who won’t be afraid to tell you the truth. Something that you think looks good on you might not be a good fit. It always helps to run your selections by friends before purchasing anything.

Develop Good Posture

Having a good posture makes you look more confident, and keeps your muscles and bones inline, reducing the risk of various health problems. It also makes you look taller, and highlights your good features. It can be quite difficult to get into the habit of good posture, but it is well worth the effort. The main thing you should focus on with your posture is sitting. Many people, including myself, tend to slouch, especially when sitting in a comfy chair. Do your best not to slouch, and keep your back straight.
