Bridget Jones

Helen Fielding has announced that 2013 will see the release of a third instalment in the romantic adventures of Bridget Jones, everyone’s favourite worrier. Thirteen years after the last novel, the as-yet-untitled story will follow the diary format that made the previous titles so compelling, although who captures her heart remains under wraps.

Jodi Picoult

March sees Jodi Picoult release her new novel, with the story centred on a young woman and her relationship with a man who was active during the Holocaust. The publishers will be getting behind the novel in a big way, so expect to see Picoult everywhere in 2013.

Vikram Seth

Due to be released in the autumn, A Suitable Girl will be the sequel to Seth’s 1993 novel A Suitable Boy. It promises to show the social and economic changes that India has undergone in the last two decades and find Lata, the young heroine of the first book now a grandmother searching for a suitable romantic partner for her grandson.

Neil Gaiman

The Sandman was the series of graphic novels that made Neil Gaiman’s name and now, twenty five years after the first one was published, he returns to the series for a new mini run in 2013, giving the back story of Morpheus before he was captured by occultists. J H Williams will be the illustrator.

Stephen King

While his Carrie is being turned into a new movie for 2013, Stephen King is also releasing a new horror novel. Provisionally entitled Joyland and focusing on a young student who discovers some nasty business while working at a circus, it is scheduled for June.

Fifty Shades of Grey

The phenomenon of the book world in 2012, Fifty Shades of Grey is likely to make its way into cinemas sometime in 2013. While no director or stars have been announced as yet, they will be some of the most eagerly sought after roles in cinema. The tale of student Anastasia and her romantic entanglement with Christian Grey dominated the bestseller charts from April 2012 onwards, and the movie will no doubt follow it to the top of the charts when it is released.

The Hobbit

Released on Boxing Day 2012, Peter Jackson’s first instalment in his adaption of Tolkien’s first fantasy masterpiece is likely to dominate the box office at the start of 2013. Telling the story of Bilbo Baggins, his search for the powerful ring and his battle with Gollum, The Hobbit has been much loved since it was first published in 1937. With the other two parts released in 2014 and 2015, hobbits and wizards will be part of the movie landscape for the foreseeable.

Carrie

Stephen King’s novel of bullied high school student Carrie using her extra sensory powers to take revenge on her oppressors gets a second movie adaptation in 2013. Chloe Grace Moretz and Julianne Moore star.

World War Z

Max Brooks’ novel about the aftermath of a zombie war was released in 2006 and the film version has been in production for much of the last year. It will finally get a cinema release in June, with Brad Pitt taking the lead role.

Catching Fire

The second in Suzanne Collins’ wildly successful Hunger Games series, Catching Fire gets the big screen treatment. Jennifer Lawrence will reprise her role as Katniss Everdeen from the first film, which topped the charts in 2012.

The Host

Stephanie Meyer’s sci-fi/romance novels have grown steadily in popularity of the last few years and 2013 sees her work move from page to screen. Released in March it follows the story of Melanie Stryder, who has had her mind taken over by an alien Soul.

Even while the publishing industry goes through some major changes and challenges, 2013 looks like it will be a bumper year for book-lovers, and with contemporary and classic books making their way to the big screen, cinema with have quite a literary flavour over the coming months as well.
