Russell Brand: Style Icon or Style Idiot?

Oooo, Russell

Before getting into it, I am going to lay myself bare and openly admit that I have absolutely no idea what people find attractive about Brand. I imagine a fair portion of it is owing to his sense of humour as, to be fair; he is quite funny if you can get past the dodgy Cockney accent he speaks with. When it comes to his look and his general fashion sense, however, there are many who think he leaves a lot to be desired.

A Stylist?

When Russell Brand first hit the scene as an outspoken comic attraction around ten years ago, his appearance was met with a general feeling of “what the…..?” For many, his self-proclaimed “Victorian pimp” get up was all part of the act. It did not take long, however, for it to become clear that the extreme skinny jeans, pointed boots, flamboyant shirts, and long jackets were in fact all part of Brand the person.

I personally remember a news piece on Radio 1 a few years ago, when during a news piece or feature there was an interview with Brand’s stylist. Host of the show, Chris Moyles, rather theatrically interrupted, as is his wont, and sounded off with his dismay, echoing the thoughts of many.

“Russell Brand’s stylist? Who is that? Ray Charles?”

In that one mocking statement, Moyles said what millions had been thinking for years. Brand is still around however, and it can be argued he has had a little influence over men’s fashion in recent years.

Is He a Leader?

When it comes to men and fashion, David Beckham is typically the guy who gets a lot of kudos for changing men’s attitudes towards fashion, and aiding the rise of the so-called “metrosexual.”

Russell Brand is an odd mix of masculinity and androgyny all at once, and it is this that has made aspects of his appearance so appealing.

Perhaps the most popular aspect of his dress is the extreme skinny jeans paired with pointed boots or shoes. Men like this look, especially with black jeans, as they can get away with mixing formal and denim, which is not always easy. The wild hair and beard can also be seen more widely among modern men, although some simply lack the panache to carry it off.

Icon or Idiot?

Truth be told, Russell Brand probably does not fit into either of those categories. While he would love to be some sort of spiritual fashion leader, the truth is that he has found a niche that fits him and he has become known for it, and having enjoyed success is unlikely to change it now.

At the same time, his look is definitely one geared towards the younger generation, and it will be interesting to see whether he changes as he approaches 40, as he could definitely move closer to the “idiot” category.

I think his sense of style is overlooked... Its so unique, and edgy, and masculine. He is a beautiful person. So interesting and complex. And extremely charismatic by the way... Not just funny.
