Fun Facts About Scorpions

Scorpions are not like other insects. In fact, they’re not even insects. They are actually considered arachnids. This is an important distinction when trying to understand and anticipate their behaviour around your home. The most common species of scorpion people find around their house is the bark scorpion, common in the South western United States, so we’ll focus on them specifically.

The first thing people want to know is “Are they deadly?” The answer is: Yes…but most likely, no. There are very few recorded deaths over the years from bark scorpion stings. Children and elderly folks are the most vulnerable to heath complications because their immune systems are not as developed or efficient as regular adults. The real danger in being stung comes from being allergic to the venom. While most people won’t know they are allergic to scorpions until they are stung, if a person already knows they are allergic to other stings, such as bees, then that should raise an immediate caution-flag. Lack of medical treatment is a major cause of fatality or severe complications.

scorpions Fun Facts About Scorpions Most people that are stung, hundreds each year, typically experience severe, initial pain. The pain and discomfort can last anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. As long as symptoms do not worsen after the first day or two, then it’s only a matter of waiting for you body to metabolize through the toxins.

So, will you die, probably not. Will it hurt a whole lot? Count on it!

“How do they get into my house?” Scorpions are looking for two things – food and water. Consider them the lions of the bug kingdom. In a neighbourhood of houses, they are at the top of the food chain. They feast on every other insect you see crawling around. The water we use to irrigate our lawns and bushes attract not only the scorpions themselves, but their prey as well. We are basically providing them a cafeteria of options. Once they have infested your yard, they will eventually find their way into the foundation and exterior walls of your house. If you find one in your hallway or your bathtub, you have essentially caught them in the middle of an evening stroll.

“Why do I only see them in the summer?” Scorpions hibernate. Yes, hibernate. When night time temperatures drop below a certain point, their metabolism begins to slowdown until they are asleep until Spring. While most are hibernating, it is possible to come across a few while in the middle of winter. If they have set up camp within the walls of your home, the temperature may not drop low enough for them to hibernate. If you are heating your home, you’re also heating it for everything else that may be living there.

“Can they climb walls” Scorpions can climb any wall with a textured surface, even if the texture is minor. As long as the same applies, they can also walk across the ceiling, although usually they don’t get very far from where they started. The one surface they have not yet mastered is smooth glass. For that reason, we recommend putting any bed or crib legs in mason jars to prevent any from climbing up any bed posts.

“Can my pest control guy kill them? Hopefully! To set the argument straight, there are pest products on the market that can effectively kill scorpions. We strongly discourage the use of “scorpion powder” (Diatomaceous earth) for two reason. One, it is not proven to to guarantee scorpion removal. It can also be extremely harmful to humans if tampered with or inhaled  It is hard to ensure children will not come in contact with it at any time.

scorpions 2 Fun Facts About Scorpions Scorpions do not eat dead insects. They like a live hunt, so one cannot rely on dead, contaminated insects to cause second-hand death. Because they behave like arachnids, they do not groom themselves like other insects do. Since they do not clean themselves, they will not willingly reapply any product to their body.

To date, the only products there are scientifically and field proven to kill scorpions are microscopic, micro encapsulated arachnicides – different than a pesticide. When activated with water, these products attach themselves to the microscopic hair follicles on the underside of their bodies. They then inhale the product their tiny holes through their exoskeletons. Instead of harming them physically, the products kill them neurologically.

No doubt they can be a tough critter to exterminate. They are master survivors  Fascinating as they are, scorpions are everyone’s least favourite pest. With the help from a pest professional, and use of proper chemicals, even scorpions will have no place to hide.
